Daniela Trinks / February 24, 2026

We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Prof. Thomas Y. Hsiang (1948–2026), a highly respected leader in the international Go community and an Honorary Advisor of the International Society of Go Studies.

Prof. Hsiang dedicated decades of his life to the promotion, organization, and international development of Go. His contributions spanned local community building, national leadership, and global cooperation. Over the years, he served in many important roles, including Vice President of the International Go Federation (IGF), Secretary General of the International Mind Sports Association (IMSA), and founding director of the Iwamoto North America Foundation for Go.

Since the International Society of Go Studies was founded in 2023, we have been honored by Prof. Hsiang’s support as an Honorary Advisor. His experience, perspective, and long-term vision for the future of Go were deeply valued. In particular, his efforts to promote Go internationally and his commitment to advancing its recognition in the wider sports world remain an inspiration.

Prof. Hsiang will be remembered not only for his distinguished service but also for his clarity of thought, generosity, and constructive spirit in communication.

On behalf of the International Society of Go Studies, we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues around the world.

Prof. Thomas Y. Hsiang’s legacy will continue to inspire our work. He will be greatly missed.
